This work was initially inspired by catching the bold opening of Mendelssohn‘s Sea Symphony. Wow—give that a listen and try not to think of it on your next oceanic holiday!
What could be more inspiring than the sea? My aim was for something less grandiose than the Mendelssohn, so I set out to paint using the fewest lines possible but still capturing the force and majesty of the sea. As I did the opening sketches of the waves, the movement of the brush against the blank canvas sounded like the tide. It seemed so symbolic and reassuring.
For colors, I used as many shades of blue as I could create. The whites and greys are a relief from all the blues—envisioned froth and foam—a grey beech.
The final work is bold but tranquil. Listen closely . . .
